Scholarship Contest Official Rules

Contest Overview

The Heart Behind the Oval Contest is open to college students and high school seniors in the Ford Blue Oval Network and asks applicants to propose a tangible project in partnership with a local non-profit or charitable organization that addresses the theme of “Driving a Brighter Future.” Three winners will receive scholarship funds and a grant to complete their project and further their community contribution. Seven additional winners will receive prizes for participation.

Submission period is open August 19, 2015 – September 23, 2015 (5:00 pm EST). Winners will be chosen by public vote.

Voting period is open October 9, 2015 – October 19, 2015 (11:59 pm EST). Contest information and official rules will be available at fordblueovalnetwork.org/contests/heartbehindtheoval.

Contest is open to students that have received a scholarship from Ford Motor Company and to students who participate in a Ford Motor Company-sponsored education program. Students must be enrolled in a US high school or college. Students must also have a completed registration form on file to verify receipt of the aforementioned scholarship award or program participation.

No purchase necessary. Participants must be legal residents of the United States and/or the District of Columbia. One entry per person. Employees of Ford Motor Company (“Sponsor”), CCO Communications, Inc. d.b.a. Campbell Marketing and Communications (“Administrator”), their subsidiaries, affiliates, and immediate family members are not eligible for the contest. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited.

How to Enter

Eligible participants must submit a brief essay including 1-2 photos that addresses how they are “Driving a Brighter Future.” In partnership with a community or non-profit organization, participants should outline what they are currently doing to make a difference in their communities and identify a project that they could complete to further their impact. Areas of need and potential projects include, but are not limited to:

  • Community and Social Services
    • Area of Need: Local community experiences issues with hunger, food insecurity, shelter or other pressing social needs.
    • Example: Students partner with a food pantry or other community-serving food provider and propose an innovative way to increase food/supplies and increase number of community members served.
  • Service Learning/Education
    • Area of Need: Students in low-income communities have little or no access to engaging opportunities in STEAM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) disciplines.
    • Example: Students develop a service learning curriculum for a low-income school that incorporates science- or engineering-related activities to inspire elementary-aged students to pursue career paths in STEAM fields.
  • Technology
    • Area of Need: Non-profits struggle to utilize technology to build capacity within their organizations, raise awareness, and/or raise funds.
    • Example: Students develop a dynamic social campaign to increase engagement, plan an event, execute a fundraising plan, etc. for a local non-profit or community organization.

Entries will be accepted via email starting on August 19, 2015, and ending on September 23, 2015, at 5:00 PM EST. Entries should be submitted to fordscholars@campbellmarketing.services.

Entries must include:

  • Completed contest registration form
  • Brief essay and 1-2 photos (see “Submission Requirements” below)

Semi-finalist Selection and Entries:

  • A judging panel will determine the submissions that will advance to the semi-finalist round of the contest
  • Semi-finalists will produce a 2-4 minute video (see “Submission Requirements” below)
  • Qualifying entrants will be posted for public voting at fordblueovalnetwork.org/contests/heartbehindtheoval

Submission Requirements

Essay Requirements

A photo essay entry must follow these requirements:

  • Using the contest registration form provided, applicants must write a brief essay (max 500 words) that describes current work and proposed project details
  • Include at least one photo related to or providing context for their proposed project
  • English language

Video Requirements for Semi-Finalist Entries

A video entry must follow these requirements:

  • Not exceed four minutes
  • Clearly describe what project or service could be completed with the grant funds
  • English language
  • Professional shooting and/or editing is not required

Non-Profit Requirements

The featured non-profit must meet the following guidelines:

  • Be a 501c3 organization
  • Must comply with Ford Motor Company Fund & Community giving guidelines.

Semi-finalist video submissions can and will be disqualified if:

  • Video or photos contain any nudity or sexually explicit content
  • Depicts violence or cruelty
  • Attacks or disparages or presents in any false light any individual or group of people.
  • Video must not contain any trademarks, copyrighted works or other intellectual property (other than as owned by contestant)
  • Entry communicates messages or images inconsistent with the positive images and/or goodwill to which Sponsor wishes to associate
  • Deemed inappropriate by Ford Motor Company

Once submitted, an entry cannot be deleted, canceled or modified by registrant.

By submitting an Entry, you warrant and represent that it: (a) does not infringe upon the copyrights, trademarks, rights of privacy, publicity or other intellectual property or other rights of any person or entity; (b) that you have obtained permission from a person whose name or likeness is used in the Entry (including acceptance of these official rules); and (c) that publication of the Entry via various media including Web posting, will not infringe on the rights of any third party rights. Any such entrant will indemnify and hold harmless, Sponsor from any claims to the contrary.

Any element(s) appearing in a video or photo, including without limitation stills, clip art, supers, music (lyrics and/or melody) or other materials must be the contestant’s own original work, created and performed by the contestant, or be in the public domain. Use of any copyrighted elements or other materials that are not the contestant’s own original work, or not in the public domain, will result in disqualification.

Ford Motor Company reserves the right to reject and disqualify any entry that it deems, in its sole discretion, to violate any of these content related requirements or for any reason for its sole discretion. If the content of the semi-finalist video does not meet the requirements listed above, it will not be posted

Submitting an entry constitutes agreeing to the terms of these Official Rules and all decisions of Sponsor and/or its designee, which are final and binding in all respects. Sponsor is not responsible for incorrect, inaccurate or incomplete entry information or for entries which are garbled, damaged, incompletely received, otherwise defective or lost due to any reason, all of which will be voided.

Once submitted, all videos and photo essay content become the sole property of Ford Motor Company and can/will be used to promote company programs and services without further compensation or permission.

Winner Selection

All qualifying semi-finalist entries will be posted for public viewing/voting on the Ford Blue Oval Network website, fordblueovalnetwork.org/contests/heartbehindtheoval

  • Public voting will occur at fordblueovalnetwork.org/contests/heartbehindtheoval
  • In order to vote, users must register on the Ford Blue Oval Network site or through Facebook. Voting can occur once per day per user ID. Public voting occurs October 9 – October 19, 2015. Winners will be selected by public voting.
  • The three videos receiving the most votes will receive a scholarship and grant funds to complete their project.

Contest Timing

The following dates pertain to the contest schedule and may be subject to change:

The top three entries with the most votes will receive scholarship and grant funds to complete their proposed project. The entries placing fourth to tenth in the public voting will receive a prize for participation. Prize values are as follows:

  • 1st Place - $2,500 scholarship, $1,000 grant
  • 2nd Place - $1,500 scholarship, $1,000 grant
  • 3rd Place - $1,000 scholarship, $1,000 grant
  • 4th – 10th Place - $100 gift card

A prize acceptance package must be turned in within five (5) days of receiving or the prize will be forfeited.

A check will be awarded to each scholarship winner payable directly to the educational institution to be used for tuition in the 2015-2016 academic year. Proof of enrollment must be provided by December 1, 2015, as part of the acceptance package. The scholarship funds must be transferred no later than February 1, 2016.

The non-profit donation will be paid in the form of a check and go directly to the non-profit in the non-profit’s name. Non-profits are subject to approval by Ford Motor Company at its sole discretion.


Sponsor decision is final. Sponsor will notify contest winners or around October 20, 2015. In the event that one of the top three entries based on public votes is disqualified, an alternate submission will be selected by Sponsor. If an alternate winner is disqualified for any reason, prize will not be awarded.

Information collected from Participants and Voters is subject to the privacy statement available on the Ford Blue Oval Network website, fordblueovalnetwork.org/contests. By entering the Contest or Voting, you expressly agree to the terms of the Privacy Statement.
